N.C. Speaker Calls for Resignation of Bladen County BOE Chairwoman

NC Speaker Tim Moore called for the resignation of Bladen County Board of Elections Chairwoman Louella Thompson after she threatened to arrest citizens for reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at a board meeting earlier this month.

This troubling news comes just one month after Chairwoman Thompson was already reprimanded by the State Board of Elections for making hyper-partisan posts on her social media profile.

In an open letter to Chairwoman Thompson, Speaker Moore detailed the importance of elections officials conducting themselves with the utmost integrity to ensure North Carolinians can have confidence in our electoral process.

Chairwoman Thompson’s pattern of problematic behavior has made it clear that changes need to be made. We now have yet another example of the character of Governor Cooper’s political appointees. This is the fourth Board of Elections official appointed by Governor Cooper that has been accused of improper behavior. The previous offenders have since resigned their posts.

It is time that Chairwoman Thompson follows her fellow Cooper Administration appointees and leaves her position. The people of Bladen County deserve to have a Board of Elections that won’t stand in the way of the will of the people and will inspire trust when they go to the ballot box.
