Governor Roy Cooper has long been outspoken against opportunity scholarships for low income North Carolina students.
Gov. Cooper’s proposed 2019-20 budget even included a provision to reduce and zero out the Opportunity Scholarship Program.
The Opportunity Scholarship Program is essential to providing low and middle income students a voucher up to $4,200 to attend a school of their choice.
For 2017-2018, the program awarded over 7,000 scholarships to needy students, and in April 2021 over 12,000 NC students received opportunity scholarships for the 2020-21 school year.
For a program that has helped more and more low income families, why is Governor Cooper against funding these scholarships?
Opportunity Scholarships are a prime example of why school choice is so important; parents should have the opportunity to choose where and what type of school their child attends.
