Dante Pittman Votes No on Letting Voters Limit Property Taxes

Rising property taxes are hammering Wilson and Nash County homeowners. Seniors on fixed incomes, working families, and longtime residents are watching their bills climb while local governments keep spending. Reappraisals have turned what should be a secure home into a financial struggle for too many.

House Republicans took action. We passed House Bill 1089, the Constitutional Amendment on Property Tax Reform. Every Republican voted yes. The measure now heads to voters this November so the people can decide whether the General Assembly must enact real limits on how much local governments can raise property tax levies.

Rep. Dante Pittman (D-Wilson) voted NO.

He joined nearly every other Democrat to deny North Carolinians even the chance to vote on meaningful property tax reform. While Republicans fought to protect taxpayers, Pittman protected the status quo that allows unchecked tax growth. Property tax collections in many counties have soared far beyond inflation and population growth. Homeowners have seen bills double or worse.

Republicans said enough: put constitutional limits in place and let the voters decide. Pittman, said no.

Pittman chose unlimited local taxing power over relief for the people who pay the bills. Pittman can talk about local control all he wants. Pittman's vote tells the real story. He voted against giving the people of North Carolina a voice. Pittman voted against safeguards for seniors and fixed-income families. Dante voted to leave Wilson and Nash County taxpayers exposed to the next round of tax hikes.

When it came time to stand with homeowners, Pittman stood with higher taxes and bigger government instead. House Republicans will keep fighting for property tax relief and real accountability. Pittman has shown where his priorities lie. In November, voters will have the final say.
