Former Sheriff B.J. Barnes Calls on Democrat Shelly Headen to Explain Violent Incidents at Headen’s Home

RALEIGH, N.C. — Today, former Guilford County Sheriff B.J. Barnes called on House District 62 Democratic Nominee Shelly Headen to explain two incidents where Guilford County Sheriff's Deputies were called to Headen's home. Relevant police records indicate Headen's spouse made both phone calls to law enforcement. The records also indicate Headen was accused of "assault" and utilizing "personal weapons."

The issue has surfaced in the NC House District 62 campaign, with voters (see below) raising concerns about her fitness as a candidate. Headen has never addressed these concerns publicly in her campaign despite both incidents happening less than two years ago and her high-profile Guilford County race. Nor have prominent Democratic backers Josh Stein, Robert Reives, or Roy Cooper commented on these disturbing allegations.

Former Guilford County Sheriff BJ Barnes offered the following comment:

“As the sheriff of Guilford County for 24 years, I've seen my share of domestic violence issues.  They are always tragic and concerning,” said Barnes.

“House District 62 candidate Shelly Headen had two different recent incidents in the last two years where law enforcement was called to her home by her husband.  The police reports about the incidents involving assault and using weapons have never been addressed by her or her campaign.  They should be.”

“The citizens of District 62 need to know that their representative can not only make laws, but they can abide by them as well. As disturbing as her silence on these matters is, the fact that North Carolina Democratic Party leaders are not questioning this concerning behavior is also troubling.”
